Dear Family,
It was wonderful to meet and discuss your child’s second grade learning experience with you at Parent Teacher Conferences. I look forward to a continued great year together!
In Reading, we are enjoying our Thanksgiving/Immigration Unit. We will enjoy various stories about this topic. The children will look into the hardships of immigration which turn into positive experiences and also reflect upon everything to be thankful in their life. This week we will read “Molly’s Pilgrim” by Barbara Cohen. The students will work on story sequencing and comprehension.
In Writing, the students will complete a creative writing assignment about Thanksgiving. In Grammar, we are completing our unit on sentences. The children will be assessed in class through a fun hands-on activity. They have been working hard to learn the importance of sentence structure.
In Math, we have been reviewing addition and subtraction facts through 20, double facts and fact families. Please practice the facts nightly so the children will master their facts. We have been working on locating key vocabulary to solve addition and subtraction word problems. This week, we will have an assessment on these skills.
In Spelling, the children did a spectacular job on the 30 Word Test! This week we will work Lesson 7: short e. The test will be on Friday, November 18th.

Dear Family,
We have begun a unit of study on the upcoming Presidential Election. We will utilize Scholastic which is a wonderful children’s magazine to further our understanding about the topic. The children will learn how the United States government is organized, the importance of voting and being a citizen, and the job of a president. The children will also have an opportunity to vote at school on the November 8th Election Day!
In Reading, we will also enjoy the Fall/Halloween season while reading “There’s A Nightmare In My Closet” by Mercer Mayer and “In A Dark, Dark Room And Other Scary Stories” retold by Alvin Schwartz. We will apply the reading strategy of beginning, middle and end.
In Writing, the students are composing a friendly letter utilizing the correct elements. They have chosen a friend in the class to write to and then we will exchange with one another once they are complete. This is always an exciting time!

We have been working on locating key vocabulary to solve addition and subtraction word problems. This week, we will be working on fact families.

We will conclude our theme on Friendship. This week, we will compare/contrast the two stories: “Ira Says Goodbye” and “Ira Sleeps Over” by Bernard Waber. We will use a venn diagram graphic organizer to organize our ideas.
We will also begin a unit of study on the upcoming Presidential Election. We will utilize Scholastic which is a children’s magazine to further our understanding about the topic. Dear Family,
We will continue with our theme on Friendship. Last week, we read “How To Lose All Your Friends” by Nancy Carlson. This story was a great spin to learn the value of friendship. We wrote a friendship story in our journals and shared with the class. Over the next 2 weeks, we will be reading “Ira Sleeps Over” by Bernard Waber. We will work on story elements and predictions. We will also learn the beginnning, middle and end parts to a story.
In Writing, the children have completed and shared their paragraphs about themselves. Please enjoy the writing piece and all the stages, then please sign and return to the classroom. The children did a wonderful job! Our next, writing assignment will be a friendly letter.

Dear Family,
We will continue with our theme on Friendship. Last week, we read “Friends” by Helme Heine. This week we will read “How To Lose All Your Friends” by Nancy Carlson. This story is a great spin to learn the value of friendship. We will focus on ways to make friends rather than lose them. We will work on the skill of compound words.
In Writing, the children have completed their final draft paragraph about themselves. The paragraph includes an introductory sentence, three details and a concluding sentence. The children will now share with the class. Then, I will grade and send the paragraphs home for your review and enjoyment. They are quite unique just like them!
In Grammar, we have reviewed the requirements of a complete sentence. Each sentence has a capital letter, ends with an end mark and makes sense. Now, we will learn the four types of sentences: telling, commanding, exciting and asking sentences.
In Math, we will begin the year by reviewing addition and subtraction facts. We have begun to work on addition with word problems. The children should master their addition and subtraction facts through 20.

Please remember, the words are given on Monday through a pre-test followed by nightly homework, The test will be on Friday of a full week. We will have our Spelling test on Friday, September 30th. This week we will work on Lesson 2: Words with c, k and ck.

Dear Family,
We had a great first full week of school togerher. It was wonderful to meet everyone on Back To School Night. I look forward to a successful year working together.
We will continue with our theme on Friendship. Last week, we enjoyed reading “The Doorbell Rang” by Pat Hutchins. This week we will read “Friends” by Helme Heine. We will work on prediction and sequence skills while reading this story. The children will also read the story at home for homework allowing them to reinforce reading fluency. The reading strategy that will be developed this month is story elements: main characters, setting, problem and solution.
In Writing, the children have begun composing a paragraph about themselves. The paragraph includes an introductory sentence, three details and a concluding sentence. They are quite creative with their writing.
In Grammar, we will review the requirements of a complete sentence. Each sentence has a capital letter, ends with an end mark and makes sense. Then, we will learn the four types of sentences: telling, commanding, exciting and asking sentences.
In Math, we will begin the year by reviewing addition and subtraction facts. We have begun to work on addition with word problems. Math homework will also be given.

Dear Family,
It has been a wonderful start to our school year. We are getting to know each other better with each passing day. We shared some of our “first day jitters” after reading a delightful story by Julie Dannebery called “First Day Jitters.” I am looking forward to many more fun filled academic days.
We will begin the year with a monthly theme on Friendship. We will be reading stories relating to being a good friend and focusing on positive friendship qualities. This week, we will read “The Doorbell Rang” by Pat Hutchins. The children will also read the story at home for homework allowing them to reinforce reading fluency. The reading strategy that will be developed this month is story elements” main characters, setting, problem and solution.
In Writing, the children will begin the year learning to write a complete paragraph. The first writing will be about describing themselves through an introductory sentence, three details and a concluding sentence.
In Grammar, we will review the requirements of a complete sentence and learn the four types of sentences: telling, commanding, exciting and asking sentences.
In Math, we will begin the year by reviewing addition and subtraction facts. Math homework will also be given.
I look forward to meeting everyone at Back To School Night tonight, Wednesday, September 14th at 6:30 pm. We will begin homework on Thursday, September 15th.
